Combining an obverse of Antoninus Pius with a reverse of Trajan
Lot 1892
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Early 3rd to mid 4th centuries. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 2.87 g, 6 h), Taman Peninsula. Stage 1, imitating Antoninus Pius (138-161). ANTCNINVZ AVG PIVS P P Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. P M TR P VI COS P P Antoninus Pius seated left on curule chair, holding globe in his right hand and placing his left on parazonium; before to left, Dacian, wearing conical headgear, seated right, extending both hands towards the globe. Sergeev -, cf. 280 ff. A very unusual and interesting issue. A few scratches metal problems, otherwise, about very fine.

This neat imitation combines an obverse of Antoninus Pius with a reverse that mixes up a victory issue of Trajan (RIC 188) by replacing the seated Pax with the emperor. The small figure on the left, which looks like a triton is, in fact, a seated Dacian, who receives an olive branch from Pax on the official issue
